DEPARTMENT OF BIOLOGY GRADUATE SCHOLARSHIPS AND AWARDS
Applications for 2017-18 awards and scholarships are now being accepted. Below are descriptions of scholarships available to Graduate Students in the Department of Biology. Please contact NancyKay.Pierson@usu.edu if you have questions regarding the application process.
The Department of Biology administers numerous graduate awards and scholarships available for Graduate Students in good standing in the Department of Biology. Applications are accepted electronically. Links to instructions and online application forms are above. Depending on available funding, the following scholarships or awards are available:
Established in loving memory of Matt Del Grosso who died in a hiking accident in Green Canyon near North Logan on 21 May 2015. Funded by family, friends, colleagues, and the Department of Biology, this award honors Matt’s passion and love of travel and research. This award provides funding for field research expenses, including equipment, fees, employees, or field related travel expense, for graduate students in the Department of Biology. Funds are especially targeted toward an exceptional graduate student with a well-defined field research proposal and budget. Preference is given to international field research proposals.
This award is made possible from a generous bequest from the estate of Joseph Greaves and was established to honor his contribution and legacy to USU. Dr. Greaves graduated from USU with a BS degree in 1904 when USU was the Agricultural Collage of Utah. he was then a faculty member here from 1911 until 1946 where he was affiliated with the Departments of Chemistry and Bacteriology. Dr. Greaves was recognized as one of the world's leading soil bacteriologists. Recipients must be Department of Biology graduate students demonstrating consistent high academic achievement. Joseph E. Greaves Graduate Scholars must be registered for a minimum of 3 credits the term the scholarship is awarded. Funds are to aid the recipient in the pursuit of studies and may be used for funding summer field research, tuition, fees, and other expenses related to the recipient’s degree program. Funds are awarded through the USU Scholarship system and will be applied to the Scholar’s account for the term awarded.
Established in memory of the late department head, Datus M. Hammond. Awards are based on scholarship, character, and professional promise and may be used on approved purchase of equipment or travel expenses to the field or research site, or other expenses directly related to the student's research project.
Established by Trustee Professor and Dean Jim and Patty MacMahon to assist future generations of graduate student studying ecology in the Department of Biology. Awarded funds can be used for approved purchase of equipment, travel expenses to the field or research site, or other expenses directly related to the student's research project.
Established by Ivan G. Palmblad, Professor Emeritus, for exceptional graduate students studying in the field of ecology in the Department of Biology. Awarded funds may be used for approved purchase of equipment, travel expenses to the field of research site, or other expenses directly related to the student’s research project.
