Community ecology. Role of organisms (plants and animals) in community dynamics, with particular emphasis on the reorganization of communities following natural (succession) or anthropogenic (reclamation) disturbances. Work includes studies of small mammals, birds, beetles, ants, snakes, grasshoppers, perennial shrubs, and seeds in a variety of habitats, but especially deserts and subalpine forests. Other interests include conservation biology of terrestrial vertebrates and studies of alternative future scenarios for land use change in Utah using ecological theory as a basis for predicting the future.
